How It Works – Our Dad’s Flag

This is our family project in patriotism to serve as a silver lining during our Dad’s deployment.  In the time leading up to his departure, we created a list with dad of some of his favorite things to do, people he most admires and places we’d go see on a family vacation.  In his absence, we are sending out our own small, handmade felt blue star service flag (that shows you have a family member serving) to these people and places for a short visit.

The official “How-To”

What you see . . . is what they get!
  1. Recipients of Our Dad’s Flag are asked to prominently display the flag for one day as a tribute to all the great folks in the armed forces.
  2. During it’s time on display, we ask that the recipient sign an official Our Dad’s Flag card stating that the flag was there on such-and-such a date.
  3. We LOVE pictures! Ideally, the recipient would have a picture taken of the flag at the location/landmark or with the “notable” person. Did we mention that we LOVE pictures?!
  4. When the visit is complete the flag, card and photo will get snail-mailed back to us (or the photo can be e-mailed) in the SASE.

Once the flag is returned, we will track it on our huge map of the United States and then write about it on this blog site and post pictures (because we LOVE them!) when we get them. Then we’ll send the flag out to the next location/person, etc….and we’ll make a scrapbook of it all.  Not only is it a lesson in geography and patriotism but in the almost-lost art of old fashioned letter writing. And what kid doesn’t like getting mail?

While you’re here, read up on our visits on the Our Dad’s Flag home page and visit our gallery of photos so poetically titled: The Flag: A Behind the Scenes Look. Be sure to sign up as an email or WordPress follower and share it with family and friends who might enjoy it…we bet you can’t guess where Our Dad’s Flag is going next!

God Bless America!

The soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen who deploy are not the only ones who serve. Those who wait at home for their safe return serve as well.

You are all in our thoughts and prayers and we are here if there is anything at all that you need or that we can do to help.
